Social Networking Sites

My first usage of a social networking service came about earlier this year when I finally signed up for a Facebook account in order to maintain contact with international students living in the same uni residence as me. This would be described by Ellison et. al (2007) as someone ‘primarily communicating
with people who are already a part of their extended social network’. My usage of Facebook beyond this is fairly untypical compared to the average user as I almost never status update, comment or tag photos and have only ever taken one quiz which I did not publish.

Since doing this I have also acquired a Twitter, MySpace and Tumblr through my studies. I continue to use Tumblr and Twitter in my own time but MySpace remains soley for uni purposes. Actually, that last point is arguable as I use it as a platform to exhibit music I have created for my web project, which is something I get enjoment out of in my own time as well.
