‘And don’t believe me if I claim to be your friend.’ – Jarvis Cocker (Jarvis Cocker, ‘I Will Kill Again’ from the album The Jarvis Cocker Record, RoughTrade, 2006)
My personal experience using social networking sites from a musician’s perspective, as I did for the DIGC101 web project, has led me to believe that there is an enormous potential for completely unknown artists to promote music to a...

#DIGC101 More Reflecting
Have now created a torrent file for the bands 5 track release in a nod to the ‘Pirates of the Interwebs’ lecture a few weeks back.
Google site is more organized now with project info, links, progress blogs and reflection esssay.
Band members are forming their own identities through blogging on the artist MySpace page.
I think this project has been fairly successful in achieving a...
#DIGC101 Rounding out the Web Project
My virtual band ‘Southern Cross Tattoo’ now has its own Twitter account and Facebook group. The band members have also been blogging to fans on the MySpace page.
Still working on the Google site as a central hub containing all relevant links and progress blogs.
#DIGC101 Second life Business
We will sell our music as virtual discs and mp3’s as well as selling virtual band merch such as t-shirts.

Task Two: You are a virtual world entrepreneur, and you want to create a business in Second Life. What sort of service would you provide? What purpose would it serve? (Social service, building specific item.) Who is your demographic?
The business to start up in second...
#DIGC101 Second Life Profile
In your SL profile, you have 500 to describe yourself. Think about what you might write here. What kind of person will you be in SL? How is it different or similar to your RL self? How did you choose your avatar’s name? What, if anything, will you put in the “First Life” tab?
In creating my second life avatar I opted for the first name London, drawing inspiration from the lead singer of the...
#DIGC101 Film reviews
Everyone’s videos about academic integrity were all highly creative and contained great humour, however my vote also goes to the ‘Food for Thought’ video. It was a great spoof of silent films and made good use of stop-motion filming.
#DIGC101 Reflection Essay Plan
As my web project was comprised of a fictional band using MySpace to promote itself, I feel that my essay should focus on some aspect of social networking sites. Perhaps how they can be used as a positive tool for the music industry to promote music in the new media age or something of the like.
In my essay I may be able to talk about the potential for musicians to achieve success through the use...
#DIGC102 Wk 10 - Research interviews
These are the questions we have proposed to ask of an administrator of Wookieepedia:
- What lead you to design Wookiepedia? - Is there much conflict surronding articles? - Is there much conflict surronding authors/submitters/moderators? - Are you targeted by hackers/trolls? Are these attacks related to the fact that the site is a StarWars wiki? - What are your roles as an administrator of a Star...

#DIGC102 Week 9 Blog - Wookiepedia
In order to undertake some online conversational analysis, Travis, Lewis and I decided that a good source would be Wookiepedia. Wookiepedia is an online, user knowledge contributed Star Wars encyclopedia that uses the wiki format. Containing a whopping 70,907 articles as of 25/9/2009, we knew there was bound to be a lot of controversy surrounding the accuracy of some of the available Star Wars...
#DIGC102 Industry Analysis Report
How are independent video game developers and the video game industry in general affected by major publishers who own developers and therefore have creative control? “Believe it or not, independent game developers are still toiling away without multimillion-dollar budgets. While not always the most technologically advanced, their products are just as entertaining as and often more original than...
DIGC102 Update
Finally decided on question: How are independent video game developers and the video game industry in general affected by major publishers who own developers and therefore have creative control?
Have also changed companies to EA, Activision and Bohemia Interactive.
#DIGC102 Week 8 Blog Online Communites
An online community that i frequent which I think is also a good source for conversational analysis is BLABBERMOUTH.NET
Blabbermouth is a heavy metal news and reviews site run by Roadrunner records which allows users to comment on the stories and reviews in response to either the articles themselves or each other.
Although it is an interesting and reliable source of music news, the comment...

#DIGC102 Week 6 Ethics Task
The industry that I am interested in working in is motoring journalism which would fall under print journalism in terms of media ethics. Print journalism is regulated by the Australian Press Council which is a self-regulatory body that aims to ‘help preserve the traditional freedom of the press within Australia and ensure that the free press acts responsibly and ethically.’ The...
#DIGC101 Reflection Essay
My experience with online technologies during the first four weeks of semester has largely revolved around the use of the social networking site MySpace in order to develop my web project. Other online technologies such as Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr have also been used to supplement and expand the project. Most of these web 2.0 technologies (with the exception of Twitter due to BCM101) were...

Social Networking Sites
My first usage of a social networking service came about earlier this year when I finally signed up for a Facebook account in order to maintain contact with international students living in the same uni residence as me. This would be described by Ellison et. al (2007) as someone ‘primarily communicating with people who are already a part of their extended social...
#DIGC101 Web Project Reflection
For my web project I have created a virtual band using MySpace in which the music is recorded by me and uploaded under the moniker ‘Southern Cross Tattoo’. ‘Southern Cross Tattoo’ is a heavy metal/electronic group that is comprised of fictional members with a fictional back story that parodies heavy metal clichés, similar to Spinal Tap. Originally I signed up for a standard MySpace account but...
#DIGC102 Information Search Assignment Report
The ongoing saga of the BitTorrent tracker ‘The Pirate Bay’ has been a topic of much discussion on the web over the past few months, being covered on news sites, blogs and in academic writings. Already being a magnet for controversy after claiming to be “the world’s largest BitTorrent tracker” (Wikipedia 2009), the Pirate Bay garnered a significant increase in media attention this year when the...

DIGC101 Update
Have now created a proper artist profile for the fictional band ‘Southern Cross Tattoo’ at www.myspace.com/southerncrosstattoo
I still have the regular Myspace page at www.myspace.com/southerncrosstattoo666 which explains how and why I have created the band, while the artist profile only contains band information and music as if it were a real band. Got a few songs now, more on the...
DIGC101 Week 3 Blog
Easily discoverable with a quick Google search, Howard Rheingold’s immediate online prescence can be located at http://www.rheingold.com/ Consisting of a fairly simplistic layout for the man credited with creating the term ‘virtual communities’, Rhinegold’s site contains basic background info, links to academic material, Rheingold’s vlog and Twitter. It appears to be...

DIGC101 Myspace Reflection
After starting a Myspace page from scratch to create a virtual band, I began by cuztomising my profile with an appropriate layout and adding profile info such as the ‘about me’ sections and interests. The next step was adding friends and I chose to start with other bands from the same genre as mine. Further cuztomising saw the embedding of video and images.
I definitely think Myspace...

The Myspace page for my virtual metal/electronica group ‘Southern Cross Tattoo’ is now up and running. Just need to create a really metal band logo for the profile pic.
Now figuring out how to cuztomize Myspace as I never bothered with it 4 or 5 years ago when it was popular.
Plan for DIGC101 Myspace Identity
Currently thinking about creating an online identity for a ficticious virtual band in the style of The Gorillaz or Dethklok in which I will produce the audio, artwork an possibly video.
We’re not arrogant, we just believe we’re the best band in the world
